When a live event for 6,000 becomes a digital experience for 230,000 worldwide

 

2020 started with in-person meetings, creating plans, and plane tickets but by March those things were put on hold. We were all left in limbo wondering what would happen with annual event plans or any large gatherings in the foreseeable future due to COVID-19. 

 

We’ve spent the last few months designing, developing and directing initiatives with the Microsoft Learn cross-company team contributing to the first and largest event of its kind in the world since the pandemic began. Microsoft Build which was scheduled to be the annual developer conference in Seattle was reimagined as a free 48-hour telethon style online event with live, pre-recorded, and localized content for attendees all over the world.  

 

Coronavirus made us change the way we think about events, it put us on a different kind of roller-coaster and despite years of experience, and all of the hours of planning that went into Build – none of us knew what would happen or if the event would be a success or a flop. But we placed our bets, went all in and it seems like we’re on the right track. We’re feeling very proud to be a part of the great team behind this and we’re looking forward to diving into our next digital event!
