Every May, I stand in a store filled with beautiful cards while the smell of fresh flowers fills my lungs and every year I have the same internal debate with myself, what do I get my mom for Mother's Day?
Moms are real world, every day super heroes and money will never be able to buy all the wonderful things they deserve. For real, these amazing humans not only created, grew and raised you but they changed their whole lives for you.
Here are a few things you can do to help brighten her day without abiding by the stereotypical Mother's Day traditions:
CALL HER
If you cannot spend mother's day with your mom for whatever reason - pick up the phone and call her for a real, lengthy conversation... you know, the one you've been avoiding since Christmas. Give her the time that she deserves, catch her up on your life and take some time to ask her about hers. It will light up her whole day so much more than a text!
SPEND TIME WITH HER
This year, I asked my mom what she wanted for mother's day and she simply said "nothing at all, just come spend the day with me."
I'm fortunate enough to live 20 minutes away from my momma so I get to spend the day with her. If you are as lucky, take your mom a bottle of wine and enjoy some quality time together.
EXPERIENCE OVER MATERIAL
For lack of better words, stop buying your mom Mother's Day junk. It's endearing when you are a child and even a young adult but enough is enough! The rule in our house is "spend on experience, not material!" Think of what you would prefer, some knickknacks for your china cabinet or a day out visiting a new city or eating at your favourite restaurant? Give her your time and do something she would love - she's going to hold on to that memory for a long time.
Most importantly, show her how much you love and appreciate her... sometimes they just need to be reminded :)
